“No excuse for not trying,” Obama tells students

Obama

On the first day of school for many American children, President Obama told students “what’s expected of all of you in this new school year.”

Obama’s speech, given before a group of high school students in Arlington, Virginia and broadcast live at many schools across the country, faced controversy before it was even given. Some schools chose not to air it, after critics said it was an opportunity to indoctrinate, rather than motivate, children. The White House released the prepared text of the president’s speech yesterday, so that parents could read it and decide whether it was appropriate for children to watch.

The president’s speech focused on the importance of education and the responsibility students have to make sure they get the most out of their education. “Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is,” Obama said. “That’s the opportunity education can provide.”

While studying is hard work, Obama said, “that’s no excuse for not trying.” Hard work is how people become successful, the president explained. Obama also told students not to be afraid to ask questions or for help when they need it, something he does “every day.”

No matter what career path you follow, Obama told students, you will need education to reach your goal. And developing those skills is not just important for an individual, but for the future of the United States. “If you quit on school, you’re not just quitting on yourself, you’re quitting on your country,” Obama said.

What did you think of the president’s speech?

  1. As a retired school teacher and principal I watched President Obama’s back to school speech with much interest and more approval as he spoke.
He spoke to students in terms and language they could understand and emphasized their personal responsibility for what they make of their lives.
In taking the time to deliver this talk at a school, in person, the President personalized his education policies and made them real to students. This will help them internalize the relationship between government and school and the importance of government support to education. Well done!

  2. well done and great speech . these young children are the future for this country. once again obama did a great job. thank you mr. president obama /

  4. as a student i read the president’s back to school speech with much interest.as we all know that it’s very interesting to encourage students, especially children because they are the back bone of future. so it was a good idea and well translated into the reality.

  5. American kids need to know their president, whether they support his policy agenda or not

  6. THE BO’s SPEECH IS ONE OF THE GREATEST SPEECHES EVER GIVEN BY ANYONE ON EDUCATION. IF THE GREAT EDUCATIONIST, TAI SOLARIN OF NIGERIA WERE TO BE ALIVE THIS DAY, HE DEFINITELY WILL MAKE HIS STUDENTS AND PUPILS COMMIT THIS INSPIRING SPEECH TO MEMORY JUST AS HE DID FOR ABRAHAM LINCOLN’S GETTYSBURG SPEECH, NOT JUST AS A POEM, BUT SELF APPRAISING RECITAL.

  7. I think the President is sending a very good message to the kids, It is how kids should act and respond nowadays, given the current situation. I hope that this will start a better future for America.

  8. The contents of these prepared remarks by Barack Obama President of America convey the essence of a smiling soul for one and all the world over on education because they motivate the complacency of all on education where both the young and old have to learn out of it in a practical way. Leaders as Ministers of the countries world over are also required to pick up its rhythm on the simplicity, meaning “the way it has been projected as one’s personal persona of experience on it running down for policies defining teaching moments at levels requiring constant monitoring on children building the background in them on the meaning of good education”. For that a personalized way simple as conveyed by the President of America stays as an outstanding example of times that in no way draws on the individual freedom of any on it including the children. My concluding remark ends by saying that “besides books, we also need to evolve the concept of empty book for a child that only retains the essence of one’s experience without the language on it like if one were to mention that one has read bible or any other religious script to its completeness as knowledge would be wrong”. “Wrong is only in our seeing like that because we need to canalize ourselves for streams that are based on the experiment with the truth and that is where one’s persona builds itself into a personality that also comes to stand for others on it. The essence of President Obama’s text exactly means that for all the wise to absorb running down the line for all on it”.

  9. I thought it was excellent! I think it’s very sad that many kids missed out on such an wonderful message.

  10. It seemed that President Obama is nice man, he went to visit student and encourage to study hard for their future,I wish him to continoue for encourage others students around the to be a good world.

country government policy and the role of the country people in the sucess of their nation .

  12. Dear President,

You do not know how heartening it is to see a national leader work on a simple thing like education. The point made by you apply to all students everywhere in the world. though hardships and the extent and level of access and opportunity may differ amongst countries. It is quite inspiring and very simple in terms of the actual steps that students can take to utilize available facilities to the fullest and also motivate others to do so. I am planning to show this video to a small group of students who despite hardships are persevering in India where I come from.

    Thanks and Regards

  13. The Republicans or their kind, are panicky. What’s wrong with a speech that emphasizes EDUCATION. America today is sharply divided on everything ! I hope they will be kind to Pres. Obama and give him the chance to work things out.
I look up to what America does in governance and in the fields of science, technology and education. I hope this kind of PETTY politics will stop.
And all that conspiracy stuffs about Obama are downright childish and bordering on paranoia. As Pres. Roosevelt said, THERE IS NOTHING TO FEAR BUT FEAR ITSELF !
    Thanks !

  14. Obama is a great president obviously in long history of US. I have listened many of Obama’s speech, felling he is a passional administrator. The future of a nation is entailed by young generation, so nation needs to care them selflesely.

  15. I think Obama’ speesch for student is a way to motivate and not to endoctrinate.
we don’t need to make a public speech to endoctrinate publicaly students. “There is not excuse for no trying” is for some students who do no want to effort live réalities. suces is to try, try and try before you get it. Obama specch was to show student that they need to do their best for their families and for U.S. progress

  16. Obama’s message to high school students was not to indoctrinate but rather to encourage students to pursue their dreams despite the hardships. He has passionate love for young learners and would like to inspire them. Thanks

  17. Lately, President Obama is held under “scrutiny” by the same people who vote him. Maybe some think that he is not doing his “job” right others think they made a mistake.

These folks should realize that “making a change” happens overnight and they should realize too, that there are some changes that can be subjective and they may not like.

but it doesn’t mean its not for the betterment for the USA. It just so happens that they don’t like it.

A very simple citation. Why Pres. Obama is having difficulty in his seat now.

    “subjectivism” by people.

I will be creating a post about this one on http://www.pinoytutorial.com/lifebytes

“the excuse for not trying” I say its an alibi
    dont you agree?

  18. Obama’ message to studentsis an inspiring one. It is the hallmark of a great leader that he/she is able touch human chords at a universal level. US embassies the world over must spread his message as such a step would reflect the bona-fide
approach of the new President. This would undo sone damage done by the ‘American Taliban’ to their country.

  19. Great speech of Mr. President,
The speech is an universal encouragement to all students over the world.

Excuse me, I copy this speech to my children and my nephews.

We are waiting for Mr Obama coming to Indonesia in the end of this year. I believe he has wonderful memories during his childhood in Indonesia.

  20. I FEEL ENCOURAGED BY THE PRESIDENT’S SPEECH, AND I WANT TO BELIEVE THAT THE KIDS IN USA AND ALL OVER THE WORLD HAVE KEYED INTO THIS PROSPECT AND TRY TO IMPROVE BY TAKING THEIR STUDIES SERIOULY.

  21. listen america, anybody who criticises this speech does not recorganise what you have as americans.

obama is just something else. we need him babdly in ghana though and i pray we can have him quite often with us here.

    KUDOS MR PRESIDENT!!

  22. Well done! ones again Mr. president for such an inspiring and encouraging message to our children, very few or none at all head of states will take time from their busy schedule to address this issue.

  23. Simple yet effective speech!

    Well said Mr President!

It’s only fools and ignoramus who will oppose such a positive and inspiring speech.

We live in a world of good and evil and we must ensure good always triumphs over evil.

An uneducated man or woman is more likely to cause damage to the society or become a liability instead of an asset to his/her country.

Keep up the great work President Obama. The road won’t be easy but that is how all good things are. Together change will happen despite the odds which we shall overcome collectively. May God Almighty continue to guide and protect you. Have no fear!
    Peace

  24. Still more and more is the U.S president becoming incredible, special thanks will always follow your way for all inspirations you are issuing to the world. May God bless you to keep on keeping on. We student shall be watching you everywhere you go.

  25. IM SURE THAT THIS MAN, DR.BARACK OBAMA, CAME IN THE BEST TIME FOR THE
WORLD. I LIKED HIM SINCE HIS CAMPAING.
I M FROM BRAZIL, I WORKED WITH A LOT OF POLITICIANS AND WITH ONE PRESIDENT. BUT,NOWDAYS FOR MY LIFE I HAVE TO CHANGE.
AND TO CHANGE IS TO PUT MY IDEAS
IN THE PAPER TO A MAN THAT DONT HAVE TO DO OR PAY NOT FOR ME, ONLY FOR
ALL THE WORLD. I KNOWN, THAT GOD
GAVE ME A MISSION, TO HELP PEOPLE
BUT, NOT THIS KIND OF HELP, IT WILL BE
THE MINDS GOD- BECAUSE EVERYTIME I HAVE IDEIAS, AND GOOD ONES. TODAY MY
FRIENDS, PRAY FOR ME BECAUSE THEY KNOW THAT I LL DO THE BEST.
BUT NOW, I WANT IN USA. AND YES I CAN
BECAUSE WE CAN HELP ME ADN EVERYBODY. DR.BARACK OBAMA IS A MAN
WHO PRAYS, ANDA I LIKED TO PRAY A LOT
AND A LOT OF THINGS ARE IN THE BIBLE
TO FINISH ALL THE BAD THINGS.
READ SLOWLY, AND YOU LL SEE.
THANKS A LOT DR.BARACK OBAMA AND
YOU HAVE TO KNOW THAT- HAD A 47 YEARS
OLD MAN, THAT HAVE YOU LIKE MY BROTHER, AND DOING THE BEST TO SEE
    ONE DAY.
    THANKS
    RICARDO.

  26. Although I’m not living in the states I feel encouraged by Mr.Obama’s speech. I take it as it is meant for me too.

  27. Hi Tokunbo how are you and family, i hope fine and well. Just a short comment, I am thinking of you, and wish the best for you always,

I will fear no evil: for thou art with me . . .

No matter what is happening in your relationships, fear nothing and no one. When you walk with the consciousness of the Creator, there is nothing to fear. Do not fear that people will harm you or leave you. Do not fear people who threaten you. Do not fear obstacles that confront you. Have no fear of harm to your body or possessions, you are walking with the strong arm of the law. Do not fear criticism. Do not fear disapproval. Do not fear darkness. Do not fear separation or divorce. Do not fear being alone. Do not fear being cast aside. When you walk with the Master, you are in the best company available.

    I shall not fear.
do the right thing, 1 love my brother,
