Ted Kennedy

Today Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy died after battling a brain tumor. Kennedy served in the Senate for more than 40 years, where he met and became close with then Senator Barack Obama.

“Over the past several years I’ve had the honor to call Teddy a colleague, a counselor and a friend, and even though we have known this day was coming for some time now, we awaited it with no small amount of dread,” Obama said today.

Kennedy played an influential role in shaping many pieces of legislation. “In the United States Senate, I can think of no one … who engendered greater respect or affection from members of both sides of the aisle,” Obama said, referring to Kennedy’s warm relations with both Republicans and Democrats.

In January 2008, Kennedy was among the first well known politicians to endorse Obama for the presidency. “I believe there is one candidate who has extraordinary gifts of leadership and character, matched to the extraordinary demands of this moment in history,” Kennedy then said of Obama.
