Speaking in Michigan July 14, a state that has lost thousands of jobs because of the lagging auto industry, President Obama unveiled a proposal that would bolster community colleges, a plan he says will help better prepare students to enter a changing workforce.
Roughly 1,200 two-year community colleges in the United States offer more than 11 million students an opportunity to begin their higher education in a small, community-based environment, often at lower cost than a four-year institution. Obama’s proposal calls for a more than $12 billion investment over the next decade. This investment would enable another 5 million community college degrees and certificates to be awarded, the White House said.
This plan, called the American Graduation Initiative, “will reform and strengthen community colleges so they get the resources that students and schools need and the results workers and businesses demand,” Obama said. This plan will encourage businesses to partner with community colleges, so that students can learn job skills directly applicable to businesses.

It is great to think that Obama helps the students those who are good in studies, helps them to improve, for that he is investing huge amounts.

That is a good Omen
Having taught for 5 years at 3 different community colleges around East Los Angeles, I made these observations: Out of 35 students I might have 3 students, who are excellent, about half can’t speak or write in complete sentences, let alone structure and formalize simple papers, let alone think independently and abstractly. Since everybody is let into the system, regardless of whether they have command of the English language or have a High School Diploma, the level of excellence is incredibly low, and the achievement bar gets lowered continuously accordingly. The quality of the school is solely dictated by the socio-economics of its location. To give Community Colleges more clout, there needs to be a standard entrance exam, which will allow for more focus on the strong students.
