Barack Obama

During a weekend packed with protests, President Obama May 17 urged the graduates of the University of Notre Dame in Indiana to have “open hearts, open minds.”

Dozens of anti-abortion protesters were arrested, mostly for trespassing. The protesters thought President Obama, who supports abortion rights, should not speak at the Catholic college’s graduation.

Obama addressed the controversy during his speech, which at points was interrupted by protesters. “Maybe we won’t agree on abortion, but we can still agree that this heart-wrenching decision for any woman is not made casually, it has both moral and spiritual dimensions,” he said.

“I do not suggest that the debate surrounding abortion can or should go away. … The fact is that at some level, the views of the two camps are irreconcilable. Each side will continue to make its case to the public with passion and conviction. But surely we can do so without reducing those with differing views to caricature.”
