Day 83: Meet Bo

Bo, Obamas' dog

In his election night victory speech, Barack Obama spoke of this “defining moment” when change would come to America. But few lines sparked as much discussion as this one: “Sasha and Malia, I love you both more than you can imagine,” Obama said to his daughters. “And you have earned the new puppy that’s coming with us to the new White House.”

Since that moment, the White House puppy has been the topic of major speculation throughout the United States. At press briefings dealing with topics like the economy and national security, journalists would ask for an update on the first dog. On television news shows, “experts” would be brought in to share their insights on what type of dog the first daughters would like. The topic even came up in the president’s town hall in Strasbourg, France.

On April 12, the White House introduced the world to Bo, the “first dog.” Bo’s arrival was supposed to be announced April 14, but word of the dog leaked. Bo, a male Portuguese Water Dog, was given to the Obamas by Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy, himself the owner of three Portuguese Water Dogs. According to the front-page article in The Washington Post, Bo has been trained and is well behaved.

Barney, President Bush’s Scottish Terrier, was an Internet sensation. He had his own White House Web page and was featured in holiday videos with world leaders like British Prime Minister Tony Blair. Will Bo receive similar star treatment? We’ll have to wait and see!

  1. Dear Mr. President,
By the present message, I wanted to tell my support for your policy in general. But I must tell that a lof of people in Switzerland do not approve the way our country has been treated during this last months about the subject of fiscal escape.
I understand your point of view about that subject and especially because what UBS did in the USA. But was it necessary to consider like a criminal a whole country who is still collaborating in other domains with you? We represent for example the USA in Iran, we also collaborate in scientific domain.
But what increased our anger is that Switzerland was put on a “grey list” and in the same time, british territories and Delaware state are on a “white list”. It would be a pity that our countries cannot cooperate anymore.
I will finish by this important remark: the banking secret does not only allow to hide a private fortune but also allows some criminal activities, like hiding money coming from drugs trade or more disquieting, money which could be used for terrorism.
If I write you all this, is because I am used to spend holidays in different places in your country and I enjoy to meet your citizens.
I am sorry for my english and I wish you, Mr. President, all the best.

    yours sincerely,

    C. Demierre
