Obama signs bill

Before taking office, Barack Obama made it clear to Americans and the world that he had a top priority: getting Congress to pass the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that he believes will stimulate the American economy by providing tax cuts and large amounts of public spending.

In early January, the then president-elect said he expected Congress to have a bill for him to sign by mid-February. Today, the president signed that bill, a $787 billion package that he described as “the most sweeping economic recovery package in our history.”

This bill is the first major legislative achievement for the new president, who at times faced many challenges in gaining support from members of Congress. The bill went through many revisions and debates before it became law.

Signing the bill in Denver, the president said, “today does not mark the end of our economic troubles. Nor does it constitute all of what we must do to turn our economy around. But it does mark the beginning of the end.”
