Speaking to a group of teens at a women’s and children’s center in Washington, Michelle Obama talked about what it is like to be first lady. “It’s one of the best jobs I’ve ever had,” she said.

The participants asked Michelle Obama about issues like education and immigration. One interesting question came from a student who asked the first lady, “why did you want to come out here to meet us?”

Michelle Obama explained that as a new resident of the nation’s capital, she and her husband feel it is important to be involved in their community.

“We were taught that you have to get to know the community that you’re in, and you have to be a part of that community, you have to get to know it in order to, you know, actively engage in it. And D.C. is our community now, it’s our home.”

Many other Americans will be learning more about the first lady in the coming weeks. The latest issue of Vogue hits newsstands today, featuring a cover story about Michelle Obama. She is the second first lady, following Hillary Clinton, to grace the cover of the popular fashion magazine.
