Earlier today, First 100 Days discussed how lawmakers are using the Internet to rally support for or against an economic stimulus bill. But we should also point out politicians are not ignoring more traditional media. In fact, an op-ed by President Obama was published today in the Washington Post about the economic stimulus bill.
If Congress fails to pass an economic stimulus bill, the president writes, “our nation will sink deeper into a crisis that, at some point, we may not be able to reverse. That’s why I feel such a sense of urgency about the recovery plan before Congress.”
“We have a choice to make,” Obama writes. “We can once again let Washington’s bad habits stand in the way of progress. Or we can pull together and say that in America, our destiny isn’t written for us but by us. … We can act boldly to turn crisis into opportunity and, together, write the next great chapter in our history and meet the test of our time.”
It seems outreach to the American people is working. A CNN story reported that some senators have been receiving hundreds of phone calls a day about the bill.
Would an opinion piece in a newspaper influence your view on a political issue? Why or why not?
WHY ISN’T THE GOVERNMENT HELPING OUT THE COMPANIES THAT ARE HAVING TO LAY OFF PEOPLE? WHY REFURBISH MONUMENTS IN WASHINGTON THAT WILL NOT BE VISITED WHEN EVERYONE LOOSES THEIR JOBS AND SAVINGS!
GIVE THE LARGE COMPANIES A BONUS IF THEY HIRE PEOPLE BACK AND NO LAY OFF!
my friend got layoff last week, he is working at USA at one bank… does the US government has the solution with this mass layoffs
Yes, all I need is to see the expression of their faith.
President Obama has state severally that anything can happen, all we need is for him to believe, if he believes he can, yes he can and we can.
The internet support rally is ideal yet what matters is them being able to express their faith in what the believe and I am ok with the stimulus bill being passed.
STRIKING ISSUES
They Are Saying Barack Obama Is The Anti-Christ? for more: http://www.strikingissues.blogspot.com
Call your senators and let them know you support the stimulus bill!!! It takes less than 5 minutes, the staffers are usually nice. I hate that I have to phone them, seeing as the President was given a much clearer mandate than the former guy was, but just DO IT! Don’t let the dittoheads appear to be a majority! (If you don’t know the number, google is your friend)
The stimulus bill is too much. We are going to put this fine country another trillion dollars in debt. While I appreciate Predient Obama’s urgency, I do not beleive this is the best way to go. This stimulus plan will do nothing to help the economy and will not help stem any layoffs. Most layoffs are occuring in the private sector. This “stimulus” plan is only providing work for government projects. Also I would invite you to contact your congress men and women and tell them that you want to know where all this money is going. This is a quick fix and our children will be left with the bill. They should try cutting the federal income tax. This relief will give Americans a much needed help without balloning the national deficit.
Call your senators and representatives and let them know you do NOT support the stimulus bill. The CBO has already stated that it will not help the economy and hurt it in the long wrong. President Obama is spending excessively just like George Bush. Where is the change?
I support the stimulus bill 100%. I hope that President Obama will be more forceful in speaking out. I hope he will give clear answers to the objections being expressed by others. In my opinion, the Republicans see him as weak and inexperienced and therefore believe that they don’t have to cooperate and they can intimidate him. They are great at giving misleading 30 second sound bites. What we need is clear, forceful responses, and President Obama is wonderful at giving them. I hope to hear more from him.
I am highly concerned about this “undescribed” large amount. Are we just handing a blank check to someone to spend as they wish? I have seen too much of that. Its bad enough that the banks who caused a lot of this mess to begin with are being given money to start the whole mess all over again. Where are the bucks for the families of those laid off from jobs? How are they going to get the money from the bank if they have no jobs. And what about credit? —-do we really want banks to advertise more CREDIT? They were poor managers of credit before —this is teaching them any new ways to manage it. This will only postpone the apocalypse that is headed our way down the road –when we can’t save anything. I am seriously suspicious and weary of this whole mess. I think we need a grassroots rebellion. Storm the Bastile! The Rich are going to stay richer and the poor are going to pay in taxes.
It is not just the banks that are responisble for this. It is the American people, the banks and the government. People should realize what they can and can’t afford. It is the classic need/want argument. How many of these people bought a house they knew they couldn’t afford? How many people charged up their credit card on stuff they really need? So many Americans are doing things the right way and this “Porkulus” Bill is punishing them. We will have to pay for this for a long time to come.
The Government is to blame because they asked banks to lend to more people and take greater risks.
The Banks are to blame for taking risk and bad debt(i.e. credit and mortgage)
It is an absolute outrage that the good standing, law abiding, tax paying citizens of this country are going to pay for a trillion dollars of useless spending. I understand the President’s concern, but once again, regardless of what he said on his campaign trail, it is business as usual in Washington. Who is to blame here? The American people who voted for change and have seen nothing but regular tax and spend Deomcrats doing there tax and spend thing. Isn’t a bit odd that not one republican voted for this in the house? Or only three rebulicans(very moderate) voted for this in the senate? Obama is preaching bipartisanship, yet is not receiving it because congressional democrats refuse to listen to any ideas they might have.
