It seems that everywhere they go, politicians campaigning on behalf of the presidential candidates are asked the same question: ‘Any interest in being vice president?’

Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney often is mentioned as a potential running mate for presumed presidential nominee John McCain. Questioned about it on CNN July 16, the former Massachusetts governor said, “I don’t want to engage in any speculation with regards to the VP sweepstakes. I expect to support the administration and the McCain team. I don’t expect to be part of it.”

Presumed Democratic nominee Barack Obama’s campaign surrogates get this question also. In a campaign stop in Indiana July 16, Obama appeared with Indiana Senator Evan Bayh and former Georgia Senator Sam Nunn. Political experts consider both potential running mates, but neither would talk about the speculation.

When Obama travels to Iraq later in July, he will be accompanied by Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel and Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed, fueling speculation that they are under consideration for the Number 2 slot. This is especially interesting because Hagel is a Republican.
